Nucleo @ Southbank centre – Music Making For All
Friday 28 June – Sunday 30 June 2013

Come and see Tomorrow’s Warriors in action in the Nucleo! We’re certain you will feel inspired, invigorated and impressed by the range of extraordinary talent within our musical family.

Friday 28 June

4.30pm – 5.15pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Legacy – Panel | Purcell Room @ QEH

Artistic Director Gary Crosby OBE will be joined by a panel of past and present members of Tomorrow’s Warriors to discuss 22 years of music making, what being a ‘Warrior means’, and the impact Tomorrow’s Warriors has had on their individual careers, and on the wider Jazz community. Free event on a first come first served basis.

5.30pm – 7.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Small Bands | Front Room @ QEH

This performance showcases three bands made up of our Youth Warriors. First up is Nérija, our fabulous all-female band born out of the Tomorrow’s Warriors Female Collective, a new initiative established to address the significant imbalance of male to female jazz instrumentalists currently on the scene.

They will be followed by a quintet led by our rising-star pianist and office intern, Charlie Stacey – a group so new, they have yet to settle on a name but have already started to build up an exciting rapport on the band stand.

Finally we feature Ezra, who are creating quite a splash with their blend of post-bop jazz and afro-beat influences. Through winning the Yamaha Jazz Experience Band Competition in 2012, they had the honour of supporting legendary American trumpeter Terence Blanchard at Ronnie Scotts in the 2012 London Jazz Festival.

8.00pm – 9.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Plus | Clore Ballroom @ RFH

Artistic Director Gary Crosby OBE hosts a special performance by Tomorrow’s Warriors Alumni, including Jason Yarde and Peter Edwards, in what promises to be a great end to the first day of Nucleo. Expect to see younger players cutting their teeth against the seasoned pros in true Tomorrow’s Warriors fashion, in a friendly and supportive jam session.

Saturday 29 June

10.00am – 1.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Jazz Orchestra Open Rehearsal | Queen Elizabeth Hall

Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Jazz Orchestra (TWYJO) is a full-size big band and a flagship ensemble for the Tomorrow’s Warriors at Southbank Programme. For Nucleo weekend, TWYJO has expanded even further to create a show unlike anything it has done before.

Over the past two months, TWYJO has been ccollaborating with music producer, James Yarde and his brother Jason Yarde – an award winning composer/arranger in his own right and Tomorrow’s Warriors alumnus – exploring the musical common ground between Jazz and Hip Hop.

This morning you will be able to see the finishing touches being added before the afternoon performance. James Yarde, alongside TWYJO Musical Director Peter Edwards will be on hand to commentate throughout the rehearsal process.

10.00am – 12.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Junior Warriors Development Session | Violet Room, RFH Spirit Level

12.00pm – 2.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Warriors Development Session | Violet Room, RFH Spirit Level

2.00pm – 4.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Warriors Jam Session | Violet Room, RFH Spirit Level

Come and see our Junior Warriors/Youth Warriors development sessions in the Violet Room. Although the TWYJO performance means the number of young musicians taking part will be fewer than usual, the doors are open this weekend to anyone who’d like to check out some of the elements of our development programme.

4.00pm – 5.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Jazz Orchestra – Groove Connection (World Premiere) | Clore Ballroom

The Clore Ballroom hosts the World Premiere of Groove Connection produced by James Yarde. With arrangements coming from three generations of Tomorrow’s Warriors alumni – including a chart written by current TWYJO member and young composer, Cassie Kinoshi – and featuring well over 20 of our regular Youth Warriors members, this project is a great example of the entire Tomorrow’s Warriors family working together.

Sunday 30 June

11.30am – 1.30pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Trombone Master Class | Violet Room, RFH Spirit Level

A master class for young trombonists with Ellie Smith, trombone soloist in our flagship professional ensemble, Nu Cilivisation Orchestra. Ellie will be putting some young hopefuls through their paces, helping them develop new and existing skills on this incredibly physical instrument. (Open to all to observe, though space is limited.)

2.00pm – 5.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors TWYJO Sharing Session | Violet Room, RFH Spirit Level

TWYJO and Nu Civilisation Orchestra musical director, Peter Edwards leads a special TWYJO sharing session where we have invited some younger musicians to try out our youth orchestra rehearsal, playing alongside TWYJO members and apprentice music leaders. (Open to all to observe, though space is limited.)

2.30pm – 3.00pm | Tomorrow’s Warriors Junior Band | RFH Central Bar Stage

A special performance from our Junior Band. Don’t be fooled by their fresh faces – these young musicians can really play! We also invite you to join us for a short awards ceremony to celebrate our inaugural Bronze Arts Award successes! We will be presenting each candidate with their award certificate before they sit in to perform with the band.

HAVE A WONDERFUL NUCLEO WEEKEND EVERYONE!
