Bailey Churchill aka ‘Baytrilla’ was a talented emerging grime MC who sadly passed away aged just 26. His loving mother, Jo Churchill and friends ran a fundraiser, donating some of the funds to Tomorrow’s Warriors. Our CEO, Janine Irons OBE worked closely with Jo to find out more about her beloved son, and about her and Bailey’s favourite musics: jazz and grime. Out of these conversations, A Grime Supreme was born – a one-day workshop on 9th April 2022 at London’s Southbank Centre, led by Warriors alumni Moses Boyd and Deji Ijishakin (aka ‘Xvngo’), with the acclaimed producer Swindle and rapper Consensus, who facilitated a collaboration between 30 young grime MCs/producers and jazz musicians, exploring each other’s genre, and creating two new tracks which they performed live in the foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the end of the day. It was a huge success!
The project, inspired and seed-funded by Jo and her dear son, Bailey, has since been developed into an extended, more expansive partnership project that secured public funding to enable deeper engagement with even more young people over a longer period, building community through the transformative power of music. A Grime Supreme has been delivered in Gloucester/Stroud and Hull in 2023/24.
In 2025, Tomorrow’s Warriors will deliver A Grime Supreme in Bristol and London.
