14 July – Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Jazz Orchestra (TWYJO) had a great time and put in an brilliant performance led by Musical Director, Peter Edwards at the Essentially Ellington Big Band Jazz Competition hosted by Jazz At Lincoln Center as part of their residency at the Barbican Centre, London. It was a great opportunity to see and hear other youth jazz big bands and to catch up with old friends.

Many congratulations to our Warriors who received judges’ accolades including:

  • Best Rhythm Section of the Essentially Ellington Competition – Joe Armon-Jones (piano), Will Burcher (double bass) and Moses Boyd (drums)
  • Outstanding Bassist – Will Burcher
  • Outstanding Soloists – Mark Kavuma (trumpet) and Ruben Fox (tenor saxophone) – Team TW took 2 of the 4 awards in this category!

More congratulations are in order for our wonderful young trumpeter, Mark Kavuma whose performance helped him stand out from the 200+ young musicians performing in the Ellington competition…so much that he has been booked to play two shows with the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra on 17 July (The Anvil, Basingstoke) and 21 July (Tower of London). Well done, Mark – everyone at Team TW is immensely proud of you!
