It is with the deepest shock and sadness that we learned yesterday of the passing of ‘Uncle’ Harry Brown. We are heartbroken.
As trombonist and Musical Director of Jazz Jamaica, Harry was very much part of our family.
More than just a brilliant musician, Harry understood the importance of ‘passing it on’, sharing knowledge with the next generation, being a mentor, being ‘Uncle’.
He gave so much, so generously, and our Jazz Jamaica workshops at Tomorrow’s Warriors summer school, Summer Runnings, were always packed sessions. And where would you find Harry? In the middle of 30-40 young jazz heads, pointing prompts, pulling the strings and teaching a roomful of teenage musicians how to stretch the beat and find their skank.
Never more was this generosity of spirit on display than just a few weeks ago at this year’s Summer Runnings. He told us then that, while he really wasn’t well at all, he wasn’t going to miss this session for the world. You could tell just how much pleasure, how much joy he got from sharing with our young people, from being part of this beautiful musical community.
The big heart and beautiful soul in the middle of the Jazz Jamaica horns section, bringing all the warm vibes to the people, is where we will always look for Harry, one of the good guys and a wonderful human being who is going to be so deeply missed.
Our thoughts, prayers and love are with Harry’s family and friends.
