Since inception in 2009, the acclaimed Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Orchestra (TWYO) has built a solid reputation for electrifying audiences with their fresh approach to jazz and contemporary music. Tonight promises to be no exception when this celebrated ensemble presents the world première of Bridge to Our Memoriesa wonderful new suite of six pieces connecting exciting jazz and improvised soloing with the personal heritage of five very diverse, exceptionally talented, award-winning jazz artists: Yazz Ahmed, Ben Burrell, Peter Edwards, Nathaniel Facey and Binker Golding – whose cultural backgrounds reflect the changing face of post-war Britain. Echoes of African storytellingSouth African highlife, dancing Arabian rhythms, and lilting Caribbean folk music thread through Bridge To Our Memories, drawing on tales of migration, family traditions, cultural mysteries and myths. Together, they create a captivating compendium of assorted musical treasures that will leave audiences of all ages utterly enthralled.

BBC Radio 3‘s Jazz On 3 will broadcast this concert on Monday 4 May as part of their focus on the UK’s finest young musicians and composers.

A Special Commission

Bridge To Our Memories is the result of a special commission as part of our Faculty Development. In addition to the opportunity to respond to a creative brief writing new music for our youth orchestra, our five individual composers received bespoke one-to-one mentoring by leading composers Colin Towns, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Pete Churchill, John Warren, and our very own TW alumnus, Andrew McCormack.
