Are you a classically trained strings player, interested in exploring jazz music, form and improvisation?
This Autumn we launch our FREE Jazz for Strings programme; a series of development sessions led by one of London’s leading jazz violinists, Matt Holborn. We are looking for talented strings players (Grade 8 and above), particularly those from a classical background, who are keen to explore jazz music, and enhance their repertoire by developing skills in improvisation. If this sounds like you – sign up now!
These workshops will run on 14 and 21 October, 4 November, 2 and 9 December. The sessions will focus on playing the blues and finding the groove and swing in the rhythm. You will also explore different ways of looking at scales and harmony and gain confidence in improvising – so come prepared to experiment! The sessions will also look at some special arrangements of jazz repertoire reimagined for string ensembles. The sessions will be led by Matt Holborn – a jazz violinist, composer, arranger and educator, who with decades of experience in jazz violin has established himself as a pioneer in inventive jazz improvisation for strings.
The musicians taking part in the sessions will then feature in a special performance as part of the TW BIG Winter showcase at the Southbank Centre on December 10th, bringing together the repertoire that the musicians on the program have worked on in the sessions.
